Italy's Government
After the war, Italy was awarded territories from the Triple Entente. Although, these territories would be little gains compared to what Italy expected in return for their participation. The Italian populace believed that their leaders had humiliated because they were considered secondary to the Big Three in the Conference of Versailles. Also, Italians felt that it was unfair that they experienced great losses to only gain minor territories. They felt that their leaders failed to stand up to the Big Three (Wilson of America, Lloyd George of Britain, Clemenceau of France).
Because the government was controlled by corrupt officials,Italy failed to create an effective democracy. They controlled the elections by bribing the voters. Instead of solving social and economic problems, they would only focus on making personal gains, which made the country poor.
Italy tried to acquire overseas colonies, but met with no success. She was defeated by Abyssinia, an African state, at the battle of Adowa in 1896. Because economic problems were not resolved by these officials, citizens didn't trust nor respect the government which lead to the National Fascist Party to assume control in 1922 |
