czechoslovakia's government
The new state of Czechoslovakia had a series of problems and enemies. In the interwar period, Czechoslovakia was a politically stable state, up until Konrad Henlein made radical demands on the Czech government. After Czechoslovakia rejected the offers, Henlein ordered restructuring of the country, and also demanded that it be put under Hitler's protection. In 1938 Germany annexed Czechoslovakia. Later Henlein fled back to Germany because Lord Runciman, a British mediator, offered the Czechoslovakian government better concessions. Hitler declared himself in support of self-determination, but Britain and France wanted to avoid war so they looked to Czechoslovakia to be conciliatory. Czechoslovakia, afraid to lose British support, agreed to the Munich Pact. Czechoslovakia lost its western and northern borders as a part of the agreement.
Czechs rebelled against Communists and began an uprising in Prague which was passive. It emphasized sabotage, but unfortunately it was unsuccessful.
The Communists, with the Soviet's support, began to gain more and more political power throughout the 40's. However around 1947 Communist's strength weakened. They tried to fix the problem by assassinating opponents and putting their own followers in police forces. In February non-Communists attempted a showdown with the Communists but like previous attempts it failed. The Communists answered by ordering police and militia, because they control them,to do armed demonstrations in the streets.
Fearful of a civil war president Benes appointed a new government filled with Communists and their allies.
